Preparing for an AWS Account Manager interview

Account Manager roles focus on growing and keeping existing customers rather than winning new logos. The interview still runs on the Leadership Principles, but the stories you need are different: expansion, adoption, renewals and long relationships.

What the role is really about

You'll typically own a set of existing customers and be measured on how much they grow and how many stay. Interviewers want evidence that you understand each customer's business well enough to spot the next opportunity, that you can bring in specialists and partners, and that you'll deliver bad news early rather than hide it.

The stories you need

StoryPrinciples it usually proves
You grew an existing account significantlyCustomer Obsession, Think Big, Deliver Results
You saved a customer who was about to leaveOwnership, Dive Deep, Earn Trust
You told a customer something they didn't want to hearEarn Trust, Have Backbone
You improved how a customer used what they'd boughtCustomer Obsession, Invent and Simplify
You worked across teams to solve a customer's problemOwnership, Bias for Action
Tip: put numbers on retention and growth: renewal rate, expansion value, usage before and after. "The account grew 40% year on year" lands far better than "the customer was very happy".
