The AWS Account Executive interview: what to expect and how to prepare
The AWS Account Executive interview is mostly a behavioural interview. You'll be asked to prove, with real examples, that you sell the way Amazon's Leadership Principles describe. Here's how the process usually runs and how to prepare for it as a seller, not an engineer.
How the process usually runs
The details vary by team and change over time, so always check with your recruiter. A typical sequence looks like this:
| Stage | What it's for |
|---|---|
| Recruiter call | Motivation, background and fit. Short and friendly, but have your 60-second intro ready. |
| Phone screen | Usually the hiring manager. One or two behavioural questions and some role-specific probing. Your first real STAR test. |
| The loop | Several interviews in a row. Each interviewer is given a few Leadership Principles to dig into. One may come from outside the team to protect the hiring bar. |
| Decision | The panel compares notes and decides, usually within about a week. |
What the interviewers are really testing
Every question maps back to one or more Leadership Principles. For a seller, the ones that come up most are Customer Obsession, Ownership, Dive Deep, Earn Trust, Deliver Results and Bias for Action. But any of the 16 can appear, which is why one great story is never enough.
They are also listening for sales-specific evidence: how you build pipeline, how you forecast, how you bring in specialists and partners, and whether you can carry a deal from first contact to a customer who is actually using what they bought.
Question patterns to expect
You won't get a list of exact questions, and you should be wary of anyone who promises one. You will get recognisable patterns, such as:
- Tell me about a deal you lost. What would you do differently?
- Tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager or a customer.
- Walk me through how you built pipeline in a new territory.
- Tell me about a time you used data to change your approach.
- Tell me about a commitment you nearly missed. What happened?
Prepare 10 to 15 real stories, tag each one with the principles it proves, and practise matching a pattern to a story in a few seconds.
A one-week prep plan
Days 1 and 2: build your story bank
List your deals won, lost and rescued, territories built, disagreements, mistakes and processes you fixed. Write each as STAR with a number in the result.
Days 3 and 4: check coverage
Tag every story to the principles. Aim for at least two stories per principle so you have a spare when the same principle comes up twice.
Day 5: pressure-test
Say each story out loud, then ask yourself "why?" three times at every step. Fix any answer that relies on "we" instead of "I".
Days 6 and 7: plan the loop
For each round, pick your lead stories, prepare questions to ask and write your one-page cheat sheet for the day.
Questions
How long is the AWS Account Executive interview process?
It varies by team, but it usually runs from a recruiter call and phone screen to a loop of several back-to-back interviews, with a decision often within about a week of the loop. Check the details with your recruiter.
Is the AWS AE interview technical?
Not in the way an engineering interview is. You should be able to explain cloud value in plain English and talk about common objections, but the focus is behavioural and sales evidence.
How many stories do I need for an AWS sales interview?
Aim for 10 to 15 real stories that between them cover every Leadership Principle at least twice.
