Salary negotiation scripts for sales job offers

Sellers negotiate deals for a living, then often accept their own offer as written. The offer stage is when you have the most room to push. They have chosen you, and changing their mind costs them weeks. Here is how to use it without risking the offer.
When to negotiate
| Moment | What to do |
|---|---|
| Recruiter screen | Share a range, not a number, with your walk-away floor at the bottom |
| Verbal offer | Thank them, sound pleased, ask for it in writing with the full commission plan |
| Written offer | Ask for two or three working days and work out year-one expected pay, not just OTE |
| Your counter | One clear, reasoned ask. Phone first, then confirm by email |
| Final offer | Check every change is in writing before you resign anywhere |
The six-step phone script
- Open warm: "Thanks so much for the offer. I'm really excited, and I want to find a way to say yes."
- Anchor on value: "Based on the territory we discussed and my results in similar deals..."
- Make one clear ask: "I was hoping we could get base to [£X]. Is there flexibility there?"
- Then stop talking. Silence feels awkward, but it is where the answer comes from.
- If they stall, offer options: "Could we look at a sign-on or a guaranteed ramp instead?"
- Close the loop: "That's great, thank you. Could you send the updated offer over in writing?"

Levers beyond base pay
If base will not move, these often will. The variable split, or a guaranteed ramp or draw. A sign-on bonus to cover commission you leave behind. The start date, the accounts in your patch, the title and equity. Remote days and a notice-period buyout. Pick one or two that matter most. Asking for everything reads as a list, not a case.
When they say "this is our best offer"
- "I appreciate that. Is there flexibility anywhere else, such as a sign-on or the ramp?"
- "Understood on base. Could we agree a pay review at six months, in writing, tied to clear targets?"
- "Thanks for being straight with me. Let me think it over and come back to you by [day]."
Never bluff with an invented offer or deadline. If it is their best and it clears your floor, accept graciously. For the maths behind the ask, read how to negotiate OTE for a sales job.

Questions
Should I negotiate a sales job offer by phone or email?
Make the ask by phone so you can hear the reaction and adjust. Then confirm what was agreed by email the same day.
What if they withdraw the offer?
A single, polite, reasoned ask almost never loses an offer. Bluffing, ultimatums and long lists are what put offers at risk.
What is in the template?
The offer timeline and 11 levers, with the line to use for each. The phone script, a counter-offer email and replies for "best offer". An in-writing checklist for the offer letter and commission plan.
