Account Executive interview questions, with good answers
Most Account Executive interviews ask the same dozen questions in different words. They test four things: building pipeline, running a deal, forecasting honestly and learning from a loss. Here's what the common questions are really asking and what a strong answer includes. The example answers use made-up numbers, so swap in your own.
What every AE interview is testing
| Area | What they want to hear |
|---|---|
| Track record | Attainment you can state exactly and explain |
| Pipeline | A repeatable way to create your own, not just work inbound |
| Deal control | Qualification, a mutual plan and more than one contact |
| Forecasting | Calls based on evidence, and saying early when a deal slips |
| Coachability | A clear change you made after feedback or a loss |
Questions about you and your record
"What was your attainment over the last two years?"
What it tests: honesty and self-awareness. A good answer: "112% last year and 94% the year before. The year I missed, my territory was split in Q2. I rebuilt pipeline from target accounts and finished the second half at 108%."
Know the exact numbers. Some companies check them.
"Why are you leaving?"
What it tests: motivation and judgement. A good answer is short and forward-looking. Say what this role offers that yours doesn't. Bigger deals, a new market or a clearer route to promotion, for example. Never criticise your current employer.
Questions about pipeline
"How do you build pipeline?"
What it tests: whether you create opportunities or wait for them. A good answer describes a routine: "I block two mornings a week for prospecting. I pick 20 accounts with a trigger, such as a new leader or funding. I find three contacts in each and run a short sequence. Last year that gave me just over a third of my pipeline."
"How do you decide which accounts to work?"
A good answer uses tiers: fit (size, industry, use case) and timing (triggers). Most of your time goes on accounts that score high on both. Give a reason for each tier.

Questions about running deals
"Walk me through a deal you won."
Use the STAR shape: situation, task, action, result. Spend most of the time on what you personally did and why. End with a number. Our STAR method examples show three deal stories written out in full.
"Tell me about a deal you lost."
What it tests: ownership. A good answer names your part in the loss. Then what you changed, and evidence the change worked on later deals. For example: "I relied on one champion and never met the finance lead."
"How do you qualify an opportunity?"
Name a framework only if you use it. Describe a time qualification changed a decision. Maybe you walked away from a deal early. Or you pushed one harder because the evidence was there.
Questions about forecasting
"How do you forecast?"
A good answer separates commit from best case by evidence. Look for a next step the buyer has confirmed and a budget owner you've met. And a close plan they've agreed to. "It feels good" is not evidence.
"Tell me about a deal that slipped."
They want to hear when you saw it coming and who you told. Flagging a slip two weeks early and covering the gap is a strong answer. That holds even if the deal moved.
The mock discovery call
Many AE interviews include a role-play or a short presentation. In a discovery role-play, ask before you pitch. Summarise the problem back in the buyer's words. Close on an agreed next step. Asked for a plan? Our 30-60-90-day plan guide shows a format that fits in five minutes.
Questions to ask them
- What share of the team hit quota last year?
- How long is the ramp, and is any commission guaranteed during it?
- Where does pipeline come from: marketing, SDRs or the AE?
- How does the manager run forecast calls?

Questions
What questions are asked in an Account Executive interview?
Usually your background and attainment, and how you build pipeline. A deal you won, a deal you lost, how you qualify and how you forecast. Many interviews add a mock discovery call or a short presentation.
How do I answer 'tell me about a deal you lost'?
Pick a real loss and name your own part in it. Explain what you changed afterwards. Give evidence that the change worked on later deals. Never blame the product, the price or a colleague.
How should I talk about missing quota in an interview?
State the number and give the context in one sentence. Then explain what you did about it and what happened next. Interviewers are testing honesty and ownership more than the number itself.
