AWS Data and Analytics Sales Specialist interview: what the postings ask for
Applying for a Data or Analytics Sales Specialist role at AWS? This guide reads two live job postings and turns them into a prep list. We are independent and not affiliated with Amazon or AWS.
Everything below comes from the public postings, checked on 26 October 2026. Our own suggestions are labelled as ours. The postings do not describe the interview rounds. Ask your recruiter which interviews you will have.
What the postings say
We read two postings. One is a Senior Analytics Sales Specialist for HITECH enterprise accounts in the United States. The other is a Senior Data Sales Specialist in ASEAN, based in Singapore. They differ in scope, so check which one you are applying for.
The US posting centres on analytics. It names Redshift, Athena, EMR, Glue, Lake Formation, SageMaker, Kinesis, MSK and OpenSearch Service. It also links that data foundation to AI and ML work with Bedrock and SageMaker.
The ASEAN posting covers the wider data stack. It describes databases, analytics, storage and governance as the groundwork for AI. It lists SQL Server and Oracle migrations among the plays.
Both postings say the specialist owns revenue for their services in assigned accounts or territories. Both pair the seller with Solutions Architects.
What the responsibilities tell you
From the US posting:
- Grow revenue and market share in an assigned territory.
- Build and run an account or territory plan.
- Write analytics visions with a business case and financial justification.
- Run the sales process: evaluation, pricing, objections, competition, proofs of concept and the business case.
- Keep a healthy pipeline in sales automation tools.
From the ASEAN posting:
- Present AWS as one data foundation, from operational databases to analytics, governance and AI.
- Run structured plays for database and analytics migrations, with competitive positioning.
- Guide account teams on when to compete with third-party data platforms and when to partner.
- Build trusted relationships with senior technology and business leaders.
What the qualifications tell you
The US posting lists 7+ years of direct sales or business development. The field is software, cloud or SaaS. The buyers are C-level. It adds 5+ years in business development, partner development, sales or alliances.
The ASEAN posting lists 10+ years of account management with quota ownership in software technology sales. It adds 3+ years of direct field sales in database products or services.
Expect each line to be tested with a story. If you have not sold databases, say so early and show the nearest thing you have.
Which Leadership Principles to prepare
AWS publishes all 16 principles at amazon.jobs. The postings do not say which ones your interviewers will pick. Our suggestion: start with these four.
| Principle | A story to have ready (ours) |
|---|---|
| Customer Obsession | A buyer whose real data problem differed from the brief |
| Dive Deep | A deal where you learned the customer's data stack in detail |
| Earn Trust | A senior contact who gave you a straight answer |
| Deliver Results | A pipeline you built and forecast accurately |
Prepare two stories for every principle. The Leadership Principles guide shows what each one tests when you sell. The AWS sales interview questions page lists the question patterns.

Stories a hiring panel can test (our suggestions)
Write each as situation, task, action and result. Put one number in the result.
- A migration you won from a rival database or warehouse. Say what the customer gained and how you measured it.
- A deal with a technical partner. The postings pair you with a Solutions Architect, so show how you split the work.
- A business case you wrote. Show how you tied a data project to a financial outcome.
- A time you partnered with, or competed against, a third-party platform. Say how you decided.
- A deal you lost, and what you changed afterwards.
Know the topics, not the product manual
You do not need to design the architecture. You do need to explain how data moves from storage to analytics to AI. Practise a short answer to "why move this workload?" This is our suggestion.
Questions to ask the recruiter
- Which services and customer types does this territory cover?
- How does the specialist share a deal with the account team?
- Is there a presentation or written exercise?
The postings do not answer these, so ask them.
Using the kit
The Cloud Sales Interview Kit has a story bank that scores itself and 29 question patterns. It is written for AWS sales loops, so it fits this one.
