This is a useful answer. Ask for the right name and, if you can, an introduction.

Word-for-word replies
Example: the buyer says Priya in finance runs it.
Reply A, for a name: "Thanks for telling me. Who looks after [your area] at your company?"
Reply B, for an introduction: "That helps. Would you be happy to forward a short note to Priya? I will write it so it takes ten seconds."
When the buyer will not give a name
Buyer: "I can't say who handles that." Reply: "No problem. Which team would look after [your area]? I will ask for that team by name."
If you get a team name, call the main line. Say: "Hi, I am looking for someone in [team]. Who covers [area]?"

Do
- Write down the name and title.
- Send the thank-you note the same day.
- Mention who referred you in the next message.
Avoid
- Hanging up without a name.
- Asking for the CEO.
- Forgetting to thank them.
Next step
Use the name in the next call opener. The voicemail script shows a referral voicemail. The gatekeeper script covers the same question at the front desk.
